Twiga Agent with a Twiga Vendor

Wednesday, 16th November 2022 – Recently, Twiga Foods implemented several changes to ensure our business model remains resilient while continuing to create opportunities for inclusive growth in the market.

Twiga recently launched a new optimized sales agents’ program as highlighted on our website, where current Trade Development Representatives (TDRs) will transition from permanent employees into independent agents on a 100% commission basis. This transition creates an opportunity for entrepreneurship open to former sales agents and the general public. The benefit of this transition is that it allows for higher earnings based on the effort and enterprise of the agent. This model has worked with other businesses like insurance and banking that have transitioned fully into Independent Agents in Kenya.

Based on this new approach, we anticipate the creation of over 1,000 new independent opportunities by the end of March 2023. The transition of the TDRs was made in full compliance with the labor laws. Every impacted employee receives one month’s pay notice, termination pay of 15 days for every year worked, and pay for all outstanding leave days. The impacted employees have also been granted the first right of refusal to transition to the new model.

Today, we have some agents earning close to Ksh 30,000 weekly, this is about scaling opportunities to the enterprising youth, who may not have access to earning a decent livelihood. Since we went public on the new agent model, we have received over 3,000 applications from people eager to join the program. Training of the first cohort of agents kick-started across the country today, and regular training programs will be scheduled 2 to 3 times a week over the next few months.

We also wish to highlight further that as part of our efforts to ensure we remain competitive and a great place to work, we reviewed pay across the entire business by increasing salaries up to 12% despite the tough economic conditions currently being experienced in the market.

Twiga Foods remains committed to ensuring we deliver on our business model of providing access to affordable and high-quality food and products to our customers.
